WD 8 TB My Cloud Expert Series EX4100 : this into my home network and found it very easy to set up the options I needed including the

Amazing piece of electronics. I’ve had mine for six months now and it’s never missed a beat. I use it as a media server and is brilliant. Setup is quick and easy and once you are all set up it just runs in the background and you almost forget it’s there.

I have had this now for nearly 3 weeks and have found it to be of great use and very reliable. The machine comes with 2 different power cables, one with the 3 prong plug. The other the usual 2 pin euro style plug. Which means this product will also work elsewhere in the world. Also in the box is one rj45 net work cable. And a ‘getting started’, guide. It is very easy to configure. You plug it into the mains, and then into your home router. And then follow the simple instructions. Within 5 minutes i was connected and able to access it remotely.

This western digital my cloud network access storage is a fantastic device. It’s very straightforward to set up and very easy to use. I use it to keep all my music, photographs and films and can access them wherever i am from my iphone, ipad and apple mac laptop. Some bits are already preset when you first set it up and you just need to tweak a few settings here and there. Most importantly i have confidence that all my files are protected and safe with a trusted name in storage like western digital.

It seems excellent in every way about from the occasional and moderately loud noises. I don’t really have a comparison point though since this is the first nas i’ve had, so perhaps it’s the norm.

  • Enter your model number
    to make sure this fits.
  • Faster speed, better streaming: Powerful marvell ARMADA 388 1.6 GHs dual-core processor and 2 GB DDR3 memory for ultra-fast transfer speeds of 114 MB/s upload and 108 MB/s download for media streaming
  • Access from anywhere: Save, access and stream your content anywhere you have an internet connection with the My Cloud mobile app or MyCloud.com web access
  • Robust data protection: Multiple RAID and backup options to help protect all your valuable media, photos and important files
  • Centralise, organise and stream with plex; the plex media server keeps all your photos, videos and music organised and prepared for streaming to your PC, mobile device, game console, or other certified media player; enrich your media with plot summaries, posters, album covers and enjoy it from home or on the go

I plugged this into my home network and found it very easy to set up the options i needed including the media streaming facility. I added cloud access to the shares i wanted to and this works great for when i am not at home. The speed is limited by my broadband upload speed rather than anything else, but that is not the fault of this product. I have it on power saving mode, and this does mean that it can take quite a while to access the system the first time, with delays of up to about 30 seconds, but this is hardly an issue. Although it is stated as 16tb if you turn on raid 1 so that the data is striped across the disks and a certain amount is used for error correction then the effective storage is reduced to around 10. It has run perfectly since i installed it about 2 months ago,, with one firmware update being performed flawlessly.

Easy backup solution and very quiet operation, even raid is easy to setupgood value for money.

Other reviews were on the money. A good product for storing your media.

Network attached storage (nas) devices have been around for some years for businesses, but now are priced in the range of home users, and give you a place to store files like videos and music that are likely to be used on more than one device in your family. You can think of a nas as a small computer with big disks, which does the job of making them available to any users that have access, either through your lan, or over the internet. This wd my cloud makes the setup extremely easy. The quick-start guide shows you how to plug it in to your router and start it up using any computer that is attached to the same router. This took me a few minutes, but the supplied ethernet cable was only 1. 5m long, so if you don’t want the my cloud to be very close to your router you will need to get a longer cable. A 3m cable would have been welcome. Once running, the my cloud is almost silent, stays cool, and might as well be tucked out the way. On your computer, you can drag and drop files on to the my cloud and put them into private or public “shares”, i. So i now have all my media files in the public share, accessible from any computer in the house, ipad, smartphones and xbox, and this took very little effort or knowhow. On each device, everything just plays. The my cloud app on my ipad makes playing media and finding files very easy. Inside the nas are two high-capacity disk drives, and these are wd’s high reliability red models, meant to run 24/7.

On the whole, my cloud works very well. No issues hooking up to my pcs, android phones or ipads, etc. Quiet, just sits there doing it’s stuff, links up with various devices as a dlna server and automatically backing up photos, etc. However, only 3* since i naturally assumed buying a 4 bay 8tb nas would be 4 x 2tb disks – right?.Nope, turned up with 2x4tb disks. This was not made clear anywhere in the listing, so has ‘robbed’ me of 2tb storage ootb as with only 2 disks the raid options are severely limitedon reflection, i decided to keep as i can now add more disks later with less fuss.

Cleaver concept – go to utube (lon seimen) instruction vids – user manual bleats on about basic stuff you allready know the app add on is good but needs a better joint documentation but its free add ons so unlikley. Overall it performs well, streaming video or music is a doddle and zips along with no buffering. Make sure you upgrade the firmware to the latest version, the cloud apps look good and are easy to install and deploy, all in all great little box of tricks.

One for file storage and one for backup. However it does still fail to do the daily backup pretty regularly. Plus you can only setup 10 remote backu.

With my children’s new found love of taking and editing videos and photographs, coupled with ever increasing file sizes and a desire to never delete anything the need for decent, reliable and efficient bulk storage is constantly increasing in the elgato household. I’ve used wd external hard drives and storage devices in the past and was impressed. I can safely say that has continued with the 2100. Out of the box, powered up and connected to my router in less than 5 minutes and its ready to go. I’m just using it as bulk storage at the moment, a task it performs admirably. Music and video storage and streaming to the seemingly ever increasing number of smart devices in our house is seamless. Most importantly the kids like ithighly recommended. Just wondering whether i need something sitting alongside it to back it up.

Excellent product, bought with some trepidation as i am not an it guru. Also purchased 4 x 4tb wd red disks which fitted without issues. This unit is sturdily built using mainly sheet metal and once fitted with disks weighs a significant amount. Shouldn’t have worried about the set-up as using the ui and my cloud software made setting the raid configuration and loading my files very easy. Now running as a home nas with several tb’s of movies plus more tb’s of photo’s and music all served up to my amazon fire tv using the plex media server. Usage to date (2wks): so far has proven unobtrusive, fast, reliable and quiet.

Just what we needed, very simple to install and connect.

Automatic firmware update downloaded/installed within minutes of connecting the internet. Wd software is excellent (no glitches yet). Running raid 5 + 1 with 4 x 4tb wd reds. Have used other makes of nas enclosures in the past but always had difficulty setting up remote access. Remote access to the ex4100 is easy & straight forward to setup, well done wd.

Acquired it diskless, put in 4x 6tb wd crimson hdds which was straightforward and painless to do. It’s early times so won’t be able to remark on lengthy time period trustworthiness, but so considerably almost everything is simple sailing.

An outstanding storage unit that is unbelievably straightforward to established up. Plug it in, link to your router, observe 4 recommendations and, voila, it is finished. Uploading articles is effortless, particularly if you might be uploading from a desktop pc – it is really all drag and drop. On the other hand, i have experimented with uploading stuff from equally the apple iphone and android apps and these struggle, occasionally uploading a modest part of what you questioned them to add. Nevertheless, no this kind of difficulties from desktops, although if you might be uploading a good deal in a person go – and let’s encounter it, you have purchased this issue to keep stuff so your first considered will be, let us shove almost everything on to it – it can acquire ages to transfer, like days. Accessing the cloud is quick, and this is where by the applications occur into their individual. They might not be amazing at uploading but they confident as hell know how to connect. You can stream movies straight to your television also and, as longs as your world-wide-web velocity is excellent, you can get an hd photograph. The equipment itself is built well, feels durable, and has the type of mild hum that says, ‘don’t be concerned about me, i will under no circumstances split down. ‘ it’s smaller and unobtrusive too but will have to sit shut to your router.

Right after applying in the earlier a my guide reside and also a wd ex2 now so much genuinely happy with the overall efficiency of the ex4100i will be sharing a online video mini serie and will update the review as i go:online video 1- unboxing and close look – https://www. As i am quickly working out of room on my laptop’s tough generate and my exterior hdds, i was genuinely delighted to be in a position to try out this machine from wd. I have used wd drives prior to and uncovered them responsible above lots of several years, so i was assured this would be fantastic, and it is. The system is very tiny and compact (our is sitting unobtrusively powering the couch). It really is pretty simple to set up, you can be up and likely within just minutes. It truly is just a issue of plugging it into the mains and into your modem, then checking out the presented web site, making an account and signing in. Transferring all your documents to it will take a ton more time of program, relying on the pace of your online link. I located that it took all over an hour to transfer 6gb, which is quite a prolonged time. Once they are transferred even though, streaming to any other system is fast and glitch-no cost, whether or not it really is a pill, good cellphone or television. The interface is simple plenty of to use, as is the wd app for your cellular phone. This is a significant quality but quite available system for backing up your information and accessing it from any element of your residence.

Wd my cloud expert series 2100 this is quickly and uncomplicated to set up,it is just a scenario of plugging the potential customers into your wifi hub powering up and downloading the my cloud application on to your pc and of you go,it is rapid and extremely straightforward, you can just choose up a file like your photos and drop onto the my cloud menu that will come up at the facet & there you go its all there, your tunes you just do the identical, you can accessibility it all and any other bits like documents from anyplace as you can download the app onto your cellphone to get access wherever you are, this involves any one who has obtain to the device,i simply call it the family members communitythe unit itself is little and appears so swish as it is in black sits nicely next to your hub with out having up huge amounts of place, would i advocate indeed. Rapidly effortless and handy to have all the particular bits stored so you by no means free the info new music or pictures. If any of the desktops that are on the program crashes you have every little thing nevertheless stored, what far more could you want.

With photos, video clips, e-mails and essential files more and more information-hungry, i have been stressing about how my previous click-cost-free backup would cope. Also, i am really involved about how often the information has tales about big title cloud storage becoming hacked. We use a number of wd (western digital) exterior tough drives at the business office, and i have constantly uncovered them very straightforward to use and responsible. When this came up on the vine, i imagined i’d give it a go. The established up is truly not too hard employing a property router and an ipad or pill. Once the wd is plugged into electricity and the router, launch the web browser on the tablet and it picks up the wd. The first part of the set up is developing people – seriously simple and they all get an e mail so they can set up their have password. From the pertinent app retail store you down load 1 application for pictures and videos, and a further application for entire mycloud access. The two are simple to set up and established up. Within just about 15 minutes we experienced three of us all established up and had saved shots and films to the wd, with each of us able to entry them all from our telephone or tablet.

      1. I take a lot of photographs. Actually, in this house we take a lot of photographs and it doesn’t take long for a computer hard drive to start filling up, especially when you have lots of videos of your holidays, grandchildren, weddings, pets, etc. “oh, you can save it all to cloud in case something happens to your pc” they said. Yes, indeed, but something made me wary of investigating that; it’s not really there. It only exists in the ether, if you know what i mean. Now, i’m far from being a technophile but this was no more difficult to set up than programming a video recorder, though i had to download a firmware update from 1. You do get a lead for adsl connection, as well as a three pin and two pin plug. There are also two ac/dc sockets round the back in case one fails. The interface is easy to use with plenty of information to hand. However, though the total capacity is 16tb, mine is showing only 11.

    1. An excellent storage device that is unbelievably simple to set up. Plug it in, connect to your router, follow 4 instructions and, voila, it’s done. However, i’ve tried uploading stuff from both the iphone and android apps and these struggle, sometimes uploading a small portion of what you asked them to upload. However, no such trouble from desktops, although if you’re uploading a lot in one go – and let’s face it, you’ve bought this thing to store stuff so your first thought will be, let’s shove everything on to it – it can take ages to transfer, like days. Accessing the cloud is easy, and this is where the apps come into their own. They may not be brilliant at uploading but they sure as hell know how to connect. You can stream movies straight to your tv too and, as longs as your internet speed is good, you’ll get an hd picture. The machine itself is built well, feels sturdy, and has the kind of gentle hum that says, “don’t worry about me, i’ll never break down. ” it’s small and unobtrusive too but will have to sit close to your router.

    1. As i am swiftly running out of space on my laptop’s hard drive and my external hdds, i was really pleased to be able to try this device from wd. I’ve used wd drives before and found them reliable over many years, so i was confident this would be good, and it is. The device is quite small and compact (our is sitting unobtrusively behind the sofa). It’s very easy to set up, you can be up and going within minutes. It’s just a matter of plugging it into the mains and into your modem, then visiting the provided website, creating an account and signing in. Transferring all your files to it will take a lot longer of course, depending on the speed of your internet connection. I found that it took around an hour to transfer 6gb, which is quite a long time. Once they are transferred though, streaming to any other device is quick and glitch-free, whether it’s a tablet, smart phone or television. The interface is easy enough to use, as is the wd app for your phone. This is a high quality but very accessible device for backing up your data and accessing it from any part of your home.

With photos, videos, emails and essential documents increasingly data-hungry, i have been worrying about how my old click-free backup would cope. Also, i am quite concerned about how often the news has stories about big name cloud storage being hacked. We use a number of wd (western digital) external hard drives at the office, and i have always found them incredibly easy to use and reliable. When this came up on the vine, i thought i’d give it a go. The set up is actually not too difficult using a home router and an ipad or tablet. Once the wd is plugged into power and the router, launch the web browser on the tablet and it picks up the wd. The first part of the set up is creating users – really easy and they all get an email so they can set up their own password. From the relevant app store you download one app for photos and videos, and another app for complete mycloud access. Both are easy to install and set up. Within about 15 mins we had three of us all set up and had saved photos and videos to the wd, with each of us able to access them all from our phone or tablet.

      1. Well, it took me a little while to understand what this could do, and the penny dropped, eventually, but i do not think i appreciate (yet) all the capabilities from this machine. I mean seriously, when i read “high performance nas solution”, “built in twonky dlna” or “multiple raid configuration”, my eyes glaze, my mind gets fuzzy and i loose interest almost immediately…so for all intent and purposes, this is a very high capacity external hard drive that is linked to the wifi system at home and when kept plugged in can be accessed remotely. Set upi set it up on a mac, on a pc, an iphone and. It is very easy, plug and play. When switching it first on, the fan goes into overdrive, just to test it i believe, makes quite an alarming noise, and then quiets down. It is completely silent, unless you upload files on the drive, in which case there is a very light noise emanating from the drive. I did not notice any noise when accessing files afterwards though. Setting “the cloud” up is straightforward and easy, there are step by step instructions. Adding additional users is also straightforward. The drivefrom what i could see, you can upload a lot of photos and music files.

7th april 2015the item has arrived and is unpacked and read to install. Despite the fact that this item should be relatively simple to set up and may i say that it is to start with, i am now commencing the process of allowing other users to access my home cloud. I have prepared a video of my early exploits, however, i hope that you will be patient as so far i have managed to open the package, install it onto my network via my imac; lesson 1 here, the my cloud was not recognised by my imac initially, basically as the quick installation guide did not state the obvious “switch it on”. It is as simple as plugging in the power, connecting a cable to the hub (in my case bt home hub 5), typing in http://wdmycloudex2100. Local and configuring the software for you to act as admin. Yes it is, but these are the only instructions available, everything else is online. After a bit of trial and error so far i have set up three users, the first was myself, for testing purposes and also my son and my wife. I have now set up my ipad for access to the drive and i hope that you can be tolerant of this review and its reviewer as the full review with assessment is likely to take some time. Connecting my ipad was as simple as setting up my account, which required authentication via an email, downloading the apps and i am connected.

I had been on the lookout for some additional storage – and so this product came along at just the right time. Not being a fully paid-up geek, it took me a bit of effort to get it all configured for my home network – but once i had worked out exactly what to do, it was a pretty straightforward process. The capacity appears to be what is promised on the packaging. It is not the most aesthetically pleasing of items – perfectly functional, just not a thing of beauty. Access speed seems good – i will admit that i haven’t had cause to try remote access via the android app. But it is good to know that it exists. It is a well-built piece of kit that so far is offering what i (as a home user with a large collection of music and other entertainment files) need. Will be intrigued to see what the power usage it over an extended period. But that will only become clear on my next bill.

      1. If you are already tech savvy you will know what a nas is, if you dont i will explain. A nas – network access storage is a tower of hard drive discs that vary in size, you can get 2, 4, 6, 8 drives of the same volume but if it is raid enabled which means redundant array of independent disks, only a portion of that volume is available for you to store things on. Why i hear you say, well its a failsafe, if the portion fails you have a perfect copy of it. So say you have a 4tb system, this will be on 2 x 2tb of storage, you will write to the 1 hdd of storage and you can set it up to enable the other to copy whatever you put on it so you have a permanent backup. On the very slight chance of the hard drives failing for example you can swap them out, so say the 1st one fails, the 2nd one is a back up, so you can replace the 1st one and it will copy whats on the 2nd one. Confusing and clever i know but thats the simplest way i can explain it. It is essentially your very own cloud server, but no monthly fees to pay, you can access it anytime from anywhere in the world, providing of course it is switched on if you leave home, it supports encryption so very easy to set up a hard to crack 20 plus digit password, 20 digits you say how will i remember that, well i put a 28 one on mine and i can remember that easily and best of all it would take a computer hacker or the government abut a billion years to try and hack it so completely safe. Once out of the box you connect to your existing adsl router and plug into a spare port, the cable is included in the box, you then download the wd cloud app to your computer, tablet, phone, laptop etc and from there it becomes a drag and drop system. You just pick a file and drag and drop into the cloud, you can set it to constantly back up your computer, tablet or laptop and even your phone, this is a very handy feature as sd cards fail all the time. Anyway the 1st thing you will need to do is update the firmware, this is a very simple process, you download the firmware directly from the wd website, and save it to your desktop, unfortunately it is in a zip file so if you dont already have it like i didnt you will need to download winzip.

    1. Wd my cloud expert series 2100 this is fast and easy to install,it is just a case of plugging the leads into your wifi hub powering up and downloading the my cloud app onto your computer and of you go,it is fast and very easy, you can just pick up a file like your photos and drop onto the my cloud menu that comes up at the side & there you go its all there, your music you just do the same, you can access it all and any other bits like documents from anywhere as you can download the app onto your phone to gain access wherever you are, this includes anyone who has access to the unit,i call it the family communitythe unit itself is small and looks so swish as it is in black sits nicely next to your hub without taking up huge amounts of space, would i recommend yes. Fast easy and handy to have all the special bits stored so you never loose the info music or photos. If any of the computers that are on the system crashes you have everything still stored, what more could you want.
