Bought it diskless, put in 4x 6tb wd red hdds which was simple and painless to do. It’s early days so can’t comment on long term reliability, but so far everything is plain sailing.
Cleaver concept – go to utube (lon seimen) instruction vids – user manual bleats on about basic stuff you allready know the app add on is good but needs a better joint documentation but its free add ons so unlikley. Overall it performs well, streaming video or music is a doddle and zips along with no buffering. Make sure you upgrade the firmware to the latest version, the cloud apps look good and are easy to install and deploy, all in all great little box of tricks.
This is my third of these units, once confirgued they work a treat, great transfer speeds of 90mb/s.
7th april 2015the item has arrived and is unpacked and read to install. Despite the fact that this item should be relatively simple to set up and may i say that it is to start with, i am now commencing the process of allowing other users to access my home cloud. I have prepared a video of my early exploits, however, i hope that you will be patient as so far i have managed to open the package, install it onto my network via my imac; lesson 1 here, the my cloud was not recognised by my imac initially, basically as the quick installation guide did not state the obvious “switch it on”. It is as simple as plugging in the power, connecting a cable to the hub (in my case bt home hub 5), typing in http://wdmycloudex2100. Local and configuring the software for you to act as admin. Yes it is, but these are the only instructions available, everything else is online. After a bit of trial and error so far i have set up three users, the first was myself, for testing purposes and also my son and my wife. I have now set up my ipad for access to the drive and i hope that you can be tolerant of this review and its reviewer as the full review with assessment is likely to take some time. Connecting my ipad was as simple as setting up my account, which required authentication via an email, downloading the apps and i am connected.

Easy backup solution and very quiet operation, even raid is easy to setupgood value for money.
Excellent product, bought with some trepidation as i am not an it guru. Also purchased 4 x 4tb wd red disks which fitted without issues. This unit is sturdily built using mainly sheet metal and once fitted with disks weighs a significant amount. Shouldn’t have worried about the set-up as using the ui and my cloud software made setting the raid configuration and loading my files very easy. Now running as a home nas with several tb’s of movies plus more tb’s of photo’s and music all served up to my amazon fire tv using the plex media server. Usage to date (2wks): so far has proven unobtrusive, fast, reliable and quiet.
Wd my cloud expert series 2100 this is fast and easy to install,it is just a case of plugging the leads into your wifi hub powering up and downloading the my cloud app onto your computer and of you go,it is fast and very easy, you can just pick up a file like your photos and drop onto the my cloud menu that comes up at the side & there you go its all there, your music you just do the same, you can access it all and any other bits like documents from anywhere as you can download the app onto your phone to gain access wherever you are, this includes anyone who has access to the unit,i call it the family communitythe unit itself is small and looks so swish as it is in black sits nicely next to your hub without taking up huge amounts of space, would i recommend yes. Fast easy and handy to have all the special bits stored so you never loose the info music or photos. If any of the computers that are on the system crashes you have everything still stored, what more could you want.
I take a lot of photographs. Actually, in this house we take a lot of photographs and it doesn’t take long for a computer hard drive to start filling up, especially when you have lots of videos of your holidays, grandchildren, weddings, pets, etc. “oh, you can save it all to cloud in case something happens to your pc” they said. Yes, indeed, but something made me wary of investigating that; it’s not really there. It only exists in the ether, if you know what i mean. Now, i’m far from being a technophile but this was no more difficult to set up than programming a video recorder, though i had to download a firmware update from 1. You do get a lead for adsl connection, as well as a three pin and two pin plug. There are also two ac/dc sockets round the back in case one fails. The interface is easy to use with plenty of information to hand. However, though the total capacity is 16tb, mine is showing only 11.
With my children’s new found love of taking and editing videos and photographs, coupled with ever increasing file sizes and a desire to never delete anything the need for decent, reliable and efficient bulk storage is constantly increasing in the elgato household. I’ve used wd external hard drives and storage devices in the past and was impressed. I can safely say that has continued with the 2100. Out of the box, powered up and connected to my router in less than 5 minutes and its ready to go. I’m just using it as bulk storage at the moment, a task it performs admirably. Music and video storage and streaming to the seemingly ever increasing number of smart devices in our house is seamless. Most importantly the kids like ithighly recommended. Just wondering whether i need something sitting alongside it to back it up.
It seems excellent in every way about from the occasional and moderately loud noises. I don’t really have a comparison point though since this is the first nas i’ve had, so perhaps it’s the norm.
I have had this now for nearly 3 weeks and have found it to be of great use and very reliable. The machine comes with 2 different power cables, one with the 3 prong plug. The other the usual 2 pin euro style plug. Which means this product will also work elsewhere in the world. Also in the box is one rj45 net work cable. And a ‘getting started’, guide. It is very easy to configure. You plug it into the mains, and then into your home router. And then follow the simple instructions. Within 5 minutes i was connected and able to access it remotely.
Other reviews were on the money. A good product for storing your media.
Well, it took me a little while to understand what this could do, and the penny dropped, eventually, but i do not think i appreciate (yet) all the capabilities from this machine. I mean seriously, when i read “high performance nas solution”, “built in twonky dlna” or “multiple raid configuration”, my eyes glaze, my mind gets fuzzy and i loose interest almost immediately…so for all intent and purposes, this is a very high capacity external hard drive that is linked to the wifi system at home and when kept plugged in can be accessed remotely. Set upi set it up on a mac, on a pc, an iphone and. It is very easy, plug and play. When switching it first on, the fan goes into overdrive, just to test it i believe, makes quite an alarming noise, and then quiets down. It is completely silent, unless you upload files on the drive, in which case there is a very light noise emanating from the drive. I did not notice any noise when accessing files afterwards though. Setting “the cloud” up is straightforward and easy, there are step by step instructions. Adding additional users is also straightforward. The drivefrom what i could see, you can upload a lot of photos and music files.
I had been on the lookout for some additional storage – and so this product came along at just the right time. Not being a fully paid-up geek, it took me a bit of effort to get it all configured for my home network – but once i had worked out exactly what to do, it was a pretty straightforward process. The capacity appears to be what is promised on the packaging. It is not the most aesthetically pleasing of items – perfectly functional, just not a thing of beauty. Access speed seems good – i will admit that i haven’t had cause to try remote access via the android app. But it is good to know that it exists. It is a well-built piece of kit that so far is offering what i (as a home user with a large collection of music and other entertainment files) need. Will be intrigued to see what the power usage it over an extended period. But that will only become clear on my next bill.
With photos, videos, emails and essential documents increasingly data-hungry, i have been worrying about how my old click-free backup would cope. Also, i am quite concerned about how often the news has stories about big name cloud storage being hacked. We use a number of wd (western digital) external hard drives at the office, and i have always found them incredibly easy to use and reliable. When this came up on the vine, i thought i’d give it a go. The set up is actually not too difficult using a home router and an ipad or tablet. Once the wd is plugged into power and the router, launch the web browser on the tablet and it picks up the wd. The first part of the set up is creating users – really easy and they all get an email so they can set up their own password. From the relevant app store you download one app for photos and videos, and another app for complete mycloud access. Both are easy to install and set up. Within about 15 mins we had three of us all set up and had saved photos and videos to the wd, with each of us able to access them all from our phone or tablet.
If you are by now tech savvy you will know what a nas is, if you dont i will demonstrate. A nas – network obtain storage is a tower of difficult generate discs that vary in size, you can get 2, 4, six, eight drives of the similar volume but if it is raid enabled which signifies redundant array of impartial disks, only a portion of that volume is obtainable for you to retailer items on. Why i hear you say, perfectly its a failsafe, if the portion fails you have a great duplicate of it. So say you have a 4tb technique, this will be on two x 2tb of storage, you will create to the one hdd of storage and you can established it up to help the other to copy whichever you put on it so you have a everlasting backup. On the extremely slight prospect of the hard drives failing for instance you can swap them out, so say the 1st just one fails, the 2nd one particular is a again up, so you can switch the 1st one and it will duplicate whats on the 2nd a single. Confusing and clever i know but thats the most basic way i can explain it. It is fundamentally your quite very own cloud server, but no month-to-month charges to pay back, you can accessibility it anytime from anyplace in the planet, delivering of training course it is switched on if you leave property, it supports encryption so really easy to established up a tricky to crack 20 furthermore digit password, twenty digits you say how will i try to remember that, effectively i set a 28 just one on mine and i can bear in mind that simply and most effective of all it would acquire a computer system hacker or the governing administration abut a billion several years to attempt and hack it so absolutely risk-free. After out of the box you connect to your current adsl router and plug into a spare port, the cable is included in the box, you then obtain the wd cloud app to your laptop or computer, pill, cellular phone, notebook and many others and from there it turns into a drag and fall program. You just decide on a file and drag and drop into the cloud, you can set it to continuously back again up your computer system, tablet or notebook and even your phone, this is a incredibly useful attribute as sd cards are unsuccessful all the time. In any case the 1st issue you will need to have to do is update the firmware, this is a really straightforward system, you download the firmware specifically from the wd web site, and conserve it to your desktop, unfortunately it is in a zip file so if you dont currently have it like i didnt you will want to down load winzip.
One particular for file storage and a single for backup. However it does even now fall short to do the day by day backup really frequently. As well as you can only set up 10 remote backu.
Works properly set up as mirrored program.
Just what we necessary, very very simple to set up and join.

Automatic firmware update downloaded/set up within just minutes of connecting the net. Wd program is outstanding (no glitches still). Running raid 5 + 1 with 4 x 4tb wd reds. Have employed other tends to make of nas enclosures in the earlier but often experienced problems setting up remote obtain. Remote access to the ex4100 is quick & straight forward to set up, effectively carried out wd.
